Legal For Trade

NTEP LogoThe National Conference on Weights and Measures administers the National Type Evaluation Program (NTEP) according to the specifications of National Institute of Standards and Technology handbook 44.  Scales and balances are submitted for NTEP testing to insure they meet the tolerance requirements that apply to their accuracy class. Upon successful completion, a Certificate of Conformance is issued to the scale manufacturer who can then advertise their product as Legal For Trade, NTEP.

Most businesses that buy, sell, or make charges based upon weight—within the United States—must use a Legal for Trade scale.
